Columbus – Ohio Democratic Party Chair Chris Redfern today applauded the national Democratic Real Security Agenda unveiled in Washington, D.C. Wednesday, as a bold vision that will make America safer by creating policies that are both tough and have genuine impact.

"Democrats recognize that homeland security begins with hometown security. Securing our borders, protecting our ports, and reducing America's reliance on foreign oil are all key ways in which will keep our country safe," said Redfern. "As a State Legislator I find that the plan's vision of strengthening the National Guard is especially important to the Ohioans who rely on the Guard to protect their states. Democrats understand that to keep the country safe we must have a Guard that is fully manned and fully equipped."

The Democratic vision for real security complements the work already being done by the nation's Democratic governors. For example:

  • Energy Independence.  Democrats are leading the way in reducing America's reliance on foreign oil by making energy independence a priority. States are investing in biofuels, hydro, wind and solar power, and technology to develop liquid fuel from coal.
  • National Guard.  Democrats recognize the tremendous sacrifices our military and National Guard make for this country both at home and abroad. In addition to opposing the Bush administration's proposed National Guard cuts, Democratic Governors have implemented numerous policies to improve the well-being of our soldiers, veterans, and their families.
  • Secure Critical Facilities.  Securing power plants, nuclear and chemical facilities, water treatment plants, and the food supply are key elements in protecting the homeland.

"Democrats are offering a bold national security strategy that is both strong and smart.  We are committed to making sure that 2006 is truly a year of transition in Iraq -- from hunting down terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, to providing our troops the tools they need to stop future attacks.”
